We haven't seen this large of a first night turn-out for about two years. Since we typically average six players registering at round two every month we may break 90 players for the second month in a row.

The Open section has 12 masters and so far has an average rating of 2223. If the average holds till the end of the month this will be the third time this year we've had a section average over 2200.

A new report was posted this week which lists all the events where a section averaged 2200 or above.
FIDE rules in effect
The July Independence Day Swiss is FIDE rated for the Open section. New FIDE rules let you get a FIDE rating with only five games versus FIDE rated players over 26 months, as long as you score at least 1/2 a point.
Also, we will need to use FIDE rules. The club will not enforce the "zero tolerance" rule, meaning players can still be up to 1 hour late for their games. Also, we will not forfeit anyone who has a cell phone in the playing room.
The FIDE Laws of Chess are online on the FIDE web site.
